What Forest does
Forest is a focus timer built around a metaphor: start a session and a virtual tree grows; leave the app early and it withers. Its own description puts it simply: "Stay off your phone and a tree grows. Leave early and it withers." Sessions earn coins, coins can be spent on new tree species, and the app has a partnership to plant real trees. It's charming, it's been around for years, and the loss-aversion of a dying tree genuinely works for many people.
What Observatory does instead
Observatory has no trees, coins or streaks. You start a session on one task, a quiet scene moves behind the timer, and the app measures what actually happened: how long you stayed, when you drifted to another app, when you paused. Drifts and pauses are shown to you and never counted as focus. Over weeks it reports patterns in plain words, such as when you focus best and which days run deepest, and a weekly review shows what changed.
Side by side
| Forest | Observatory | |
|---|---|---|
| Core idea | Grow a tree by not leaving the app | Measure real focus on one task |
| Session length | Fixed countdown you set in advance | Open session; stop when the work stops |
| Leaving the app | The tree withers | Counted as a drift, shown, never added to focus time |
| Motivation style | Gamified: coins, species, planting | Honest feedback: patterns, review, experiments |
| Stats | Time per tag, daily and weekly totals | On-task rate, drift rate, heatmap of start times, records, trajectory, per-project and per-task time |
| Insights | Charts | Written patterns from your own sessions; says "not enough data" rather than guessing |
| Quiet days | A gap in the forest | Treated as a lighter stretch, not a failure |
| Platforms | iPhone, Android, browser extension | iPhone only |
| Price | Paid app on iOS; see the App Store listing | Free to start; Premium $7.99/month, $49.99/year or $129.99 lifetime |

When Forest is the better choice
- You respond well to a visible reward and a small penalty for breaking focus.
- You want the same app on Android or as a browser extension.
- You like the tree-planting angle.
When Observatory is the better choice
- You've stopped noticing the tree, or started resenting it.
- You want to know how much of your "focus time" was really focus.
- You work in long, uneven sessions rather than fixed blocks.
- You'd rather be told the truth calmly than be motivated by guilt.

Questions
Is Observatory a Pomodoro timer like Forest?
No. Forest runs a fixed countdown and rewards you at the end. Observatory runs an open session on one task and measures how much of it was real focus, so you can work in whatever length suits the task.
Does Observatory block other apps?
No. If you leave, it notes a drift and invites you back. The drift is shown honestly rather than punished.
Which is free?
Observatory's focus timer, week and month stats and a few projects are free, with Premium for the full companion. Forest is sold on the App Store; check its listing for the current price in your country.
